This beautiful scrappy quilt kit from Westwood Acres Fabric is the first quilt kit I've ever purchased. It's the Sonnet Quilt Kit in the Cinnamon colorway.
This kit comes with 24 low-volume fat quarters and 12 cinnamon-colored fat quarters, and a printed pattern.
The kit will make a twin-sized patchwork quilt top.
I originally fell in love with the Golden Afternoon Sonnet quilt. But that one sold out before I had a chance to purchase.
So when Cinnamon came along I made sure to scoop it up right away.
My experience with Westwood Acres Fabric store is that they shipped quickly and my order was packaged well.
What originally attracted me to the quilt was the patchwork/scrappy look of it. And the idea of yellow and now a cinnamon colored quilt is unique. I don't often see quilts in these colors that really get my attention.
I was so impressed with the variety of fabrics in the quilt kit. There was no way I could have purchased all this variety in as cost effective of a way as I could in this kit.
In addition to the actual variety of the fabrics, I don't think I ever would've thought to combine these different fabrics. Especially with the low-volume fabrics. Some of them have blue or prints that I would not have seen and thought, "Yes, these will go together with cinnamon color."
Changing from machine piecing to hand piecing
The directions for this quilt are very detailed and easy to understand for somebody like me who's never done a big quilt in this way.
However, the directions are geared towards somebody piecing this on a machine. There are some tips for sewing this that include sewing strips.
But since I'm hand piecing this, I'm going to change up those directions and instead cut the pieces smaller and stitch them as individual blocks instead of long strips.
Changing Quilt Size
Here's a thing about my quilts - I prefer all my quilts to just be smaller lap-size quilts. My favorite way to use quilts is to snuggle under a quilt when I'm sitting on the couch or on my office chair. I don't really need a quilt for my bed - but if this one ends up big enough I might use it on my bed. We'll see.
Getting Started On This New Quilt
My plan is to cut up the fabrics so I have some pieces to start working with. I think I can get this blanket done if I just work on it a little at a time.
Happy quilting!
